Enjoyed working with model/actor Michael Franji this past week. We shot for about an hour in an urban park setting, which allowed us to get a variety of looks. Michael was easy-going and confident, so we were able to work quickly getting these shots.

The black & white at the top of this page was the last shot of the day. He posed on an overlook while I stood below in the park and photographed him with the high-rise in the background. I wanted to use the building’s edge as multiple leading lines to the subject. The unusual angle helps make this shot interesting, and while the color image was good I like the contrast of the black & white best.

Water features also are great for punching up a portrait. Here, I posed Michael by a pond and took the photo while balancing on the same rock wall. With the mostly green/yellow color tone, the blue sweater/black jeans really pop, bringing the subject into the foreground.

Experimentation is a great way to learn to use background elements. Always accentuate, rather than distract from the model.

Morning Mist

Many people believe that to capture the best natural light photographs you need a lot of bright sunshine. But most photographers will tell you to be careful with strong overhead sunshine and to take advantage of all kinds of weather to achieve a wide variety of quality shots. These 3 photographs, from a photo session this week, were made during a morning that saw more mist than not.

I booked a fashion photo shoot with an actress and model, Allison Cain, here in Atlanta and we met at our outdoor location, but because of the weather decided to move to a nearby, more suitable spot. Photographers have to be flexible with things that come up, and so I try to maintain a positive vibe with everyone I work with.

Allison, who was a treat to work with–a real pro, styled a couple of unique handmade peasant dresses for the shoot. Although we originally went for a modern hippie look, because of the new location and an added accessory, the look changed in ways that were unexpected but probably better than originally anticipated.

The cranberries, when added to the look of the white dress and the woodsy location, lent those photos a mythological feel–maybe with an air of modern wood nymph. While the blue and green peasant dress paired with the grain mill setting made Allison seem transported from the mid-1800’s. Her portrait above could be a book cover or movie poster from a period piece.

Anyway, change is good and forces you to be creative. Even when change is small things work out in surprising ways. We got so many good shots, I’ll have to add more in a later post. Many thanks to Allison for a great time shooting fashion together.  Cheers!
