Island Time

These are random shots representing two other aspects of photography, besides portraiture styles, that I enjoy: architecture and nature. The church above is Lovely Lane Chapel at Epworth By The Sea, St. Simons Island, Georgia. A charming old building from the 1880’s, in a charming location, it had to be photographed. Couldn’t resist.

Also on St. Simons is this grand old cedar tree overlooking the water, gnarled and twisted from the constant beach breezes. I took several photos from different angles trying to decide on its “best” side of interesting textures in the light and shadow. Only later did I decide to convert it to black and white.

Just steps away, I walked by this cluster of mushrooms sprouting in the damp grass. I photographed this quirky little fungus by getting down beside it right at eye level. The canopy of the cedar tree, from the previous picture, makes a splendid backdrop for this stark white mushroom.

Several folks walked by and chuckled at the sight of me stretched out in the wet grass. But I was vindicated by another photographer who stopped, nodded approvingly, and told me where to find some more of these interesting and short models to shoot.

Summer Fashion Photography

Summertime brings warmer temperatures and cooler clothes. I worked with a talented male model, Brandon Quigley, on a fashion shoot this week in Atlanta. The outfit he styled was white chinos with dark blue v-neck sweater, overlaid with army green vest, and vans.

Brandon brought a great vibe to the photo session, which definitely transfers to the images, with his professionalism and laid-back attitude. Although it was a typically hot summer day in the South, we got some really great shots together.

One aspect of photography that I enjoy is working with the elements to get interesting photographs. In these pictures I tried to let the sun and heat naturally influence the angles that were chosen and poses we concentrated on. To try and ignore the environment for the sake of the photo might have been a real struggle, leading to an unproductive outing. But, I think we produced better and more creative photos by accepting the conditions and using them to guide the shoot.

Garden Photo Shoot

Last week I raced impending rain clouds to complete a fashion photo shoot with the lovely model, Laura Rozar. Nestled in between the blooming flowers of a perennial garden, Laura posed for the camera, checked the most recent images, and quickly adjusted her pose. Working with another should be a collaboration, and I appreciate a model who can not only take instruction but turn around and offer more–an improvement, or creative idea–as she did in the photo above.

The outfit being modeled in these photos, a peach crop-top paired with a hot-pink skirt, was a vivid standout among the greenery of the garden. Despite the brilliant color combinations, I also wanted to capture at least one photo as a sensitive black-and-white portrait study and emphasize the lighting rather than the colors. See below, I think it turned out well and is a great example of the connection between camera and subject.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Abandoned

Hello everyone, I’m entering my first photo challenge with this post on the theme abandoned.

Just this past weekend I discovered an old house that has seen better days, and I chose four shots that show the place in detail. All were taken in color and then converted to monochrome in post-processing.

Finding, seeing, and photographing old houses is one of my favorite hobbies so I’m excited that Notes Of Light gets to take part in this photography challenge, especially as it is my first one here on WordPress.
