Ready For Springtime (Portraits From Almost A Year Ago)

Here in Atlanta we have been in the midst of a dreary bit of Winter weather and there are little signs that it will let up soon. In an optimistic attempt to push the current snow, sleet, and rain from reality into memory, I’ve looked through portrait sessions from this past Spring and selected a few unpublished (until now!) photos to share with you all.

I’m glad these photos can get some airtime now; although not chosen at the time, I love the way these turned out. And they have me hoping for a quick change in the weather.

I’m reminded of warmer weather when beautiful flowers are emerging and the days begin lasting longer.

Photo Shoot With Tiffany

As winter is approaching, we’re getting less and less adequate time for photo sessions. The days are shorter, the weather less predictable and certainly chillier, too. During a quick break in the rain a couple of weeks ago, I fit in a photography shoot with Tiffany.

Tiffany is an easy going young lady, and her relaxed nature shows up in the photos. She had no problem working to get the shots we needed, laying on the damp ground for one, climbing atop a column on a bridge for another, and standing in the middle of a creek.

That relaxed personality, combined with a pretty setting and pretty subject make for winning photos. And we had a great time working together.

Rainy Day Photo Shoot

Atlanta should become known for having a great modeling scene. I had another good photo shoot, this time with a nice local model, the beautiful Tayla Morris. Even though it had rained for several hours and the temperature was beginning to drop, soon to land in the 20’s, she showed up ready to work our outdoor session.

She posed for my camera like a champ, never complaining about the cold, gusty wind. Only after I asked her did she admit to being cold. But we still managed to get photos like this:

Photographers appreciate it when models give their best even when conditions aren’t so good. Towards the end of the photo shoot Tayla braved a wardrobe change, putting on a short sleeve shirt for some final shots, including this amazing one:

Yoga Portrait Session

When DeAnna asked me to shoot her yoga portrait, I jumped at the chance. Not only is she a good friend, but I also like taking photographs of people who enjoy what they do, as that translates well onto the image.  As a popular yoga instructor, DeAnna needed these pictures for advertising and promoting her classes at Kashi Atlanta.

The morning of her portrait shoot was beautiful, the weather perfect. It was an easy, relaxed shoot, and she glided through a series of poses as the camera clicked away.  Being a photographer who knows only a little about yoga, I appreciated DeAnna’s spot-on suggestions and ideas.

The shoot was a fun collaboration, and the experience was seemingly blessed and approved when during the final poses a rainbow appeared in the morning sky. Amazing.

Another fun photo shoot, this one with a nice young man posing for his casual senior portraits.

A memorable photograph is one that captures the personality of the subject, and I like the one above, particularly, because it has a genuine quality.

Location, even when it is a secondary subject, is important and says much. We chose an urban environment for his shoot, to convey progress, potential, and an exciting future.

It’s nice to be a part of people’s memorable moments. A little planning, a little spontaneity, and preparation helps to capture those great images they will keep a lifetime.</div.

Fashion Shoot

Naomi is a fashion model here in Atlanta whose work I’ve admired. Circumstances worked out and we got to collaborate on a photo shoot together at a beautiful garden location.

Naomi was a real pro and it made the photo session very easy and laid back. The clothes were great and she looked great modelling them, and we ended up with several shots that I really like.

On the next shot, we found a concrete staircase that perfectly matched her dress. I like to get a variety of shots, and the absence of color here helped this set to stand out from the colorful photos in the garden.

I want to conclude with a beautiful close-up of Naomi that’s nearer in style to portrait photography than fashion photography, and was one of my favorites from the day.

Portrait Session – Lauren

One of the things I like most doing photography is getting to meet new people.  A model, named Lauren, I worked with last week was a pleasure to work with and her photos turned out really well.

I enjoy creating portrait shoots that are beautiful  and evocative and spark the imagination, and she worked hard to deliver what I needed for each shot.

She even delivered a great fashion pose midway through her set (below).

Springtime Portrait Session

Springtime in Atlanta is always a great time of year with the variety of flowering plants, and I can’t imagine anywhere else being quite as pretty when they are all in bloom. As I like to incorporate scenery into my portraits I wanted to take advantage of all of the outdoor beauty with a portrait photo session.

This young model was wonderful to work with, looks beautiful, and was even agreeable with getting up early for the morning shoot. While I usually shy away from special effects, I added antiquing which seemed appropriate for this first shot. The second shot was a concept photograph of which we took advantage of our surroundings and streaming light.

The third was the model purely her being herself.  I usually give models minimal instruction if the they are relaxed and natural, which she was.

The fourth picture we decided to try after we thought we had finished for the day, using a dogwood tree’s blossoms of which Atlanta is famous.

Back Lighting

This post features photographs that I took while experimenting with back lighting. While at a local horse farm during the time of sunset, I noticed a horse standing in a field on a hill. The sunlight was shining through his hair creating long shadows across the hard ground and tall stalks of grass.

I moved quickly to the field, entered through an old gate, and tried to silently approach the horse so as to get into a choice position. I snapped several shots before the animal noticed I was there and the light began to fade.

These two shots were taken with a 50mm lens at f-stop 2.2 for 1/640 of a second. I used a faster shutter speed in case the horse decided to move while I was taking the photograph.

Enjoy the gallery, click on a photo to enlarge. 🙂

Plant Life

Here’s a few shots of flowers and berries that I like.  I took these all at different times and the only indoor photo is of the African Violets. The hydrangea flower was left over from last season and is dried out, but has an amazing almost-translucent quality when back lit. Enjoy…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Abandoned

Hello everyone, I’m entering my first photo challenge with this post on the theme abandoned.

Just this past weekend I discovered an old house that has seen better days, and I chose four shots that show the place in detail. All were taken in color and then converted to monochrome in post-processing.

Finding, seeing, and photographing old houses is one of my favorite hobbies so I’m excited that Notes Of Light gets to take part in this photography challenge, especially as it is my first one here on WordPress.

Stone Mountain model

This young gal nailed her photo shoot that we did last month! Besides being a beautiful subject, she was easy to work with and gave me a variety of expressions during the time we had. She had an open mind in regards to my suggestions for looks and poses. When the model is relaxed and natural it not only helps the photographer, but everyone involved.

The day’s weather had a large impact on the tone of the photos and gave us some great diffused lighting with which to work. The photo against the woodsy backdrop turned out to be one of favorites, but was only taken at the last minute and spur-the-moment. The location was almost passed by. It goes to show that you should keep an open mind because you never know what might work out to be better than expected.
