Urban Woods

Enjoyed working with model/actor Michael Franji this past week. We shot for about an hour in an urban park setting, which allowed us to get a variety of looks. Michael was easy-going and confident, so we were able to work quickly getting these shots.

The black & white at the top of this page was the last shot of the day. He posed on an overlook while I stood below in the park and photographed him with the high-rise in the background. I wanted to use the building’s edge as multiple leading lines to the subject. The unusual angle helps make this shot interesting, and while the color image was good I like the contrast of the black & white best.

Water features also are great for punching up a portrait. Here, I posed Michael by a pond and took the photo while balancing on the same rock wall. With the mostly green/yellow color tone, the blue sweater/black jeans really pop, bringing the subject into the foreground.

Experimentation is a great way to learn to use background elements. Always accentuate, rather than distract from the model.

Island Time

These are random shots representing two other aspects of photography, besides portraiture styles, that I enjoy: architecture and nature. The church above is Lovely Lane Chapel at Epworth By The Sea, St. Simons Island, Georgia. A charming old building from the 1880’s, in a charming location, it had to be photographed. Couldn’t resist.

Also on St. Simons is this grand old cedar tree overlooking the water, gnarled and twisted from the constant beach breezes. I took several photos from different angles trying to decide on its “best” side of interesting textures in the light and shadow. Only later did I decide to convert it to black and white.

Just steps away, I walked by this cluster of mushrooms sprouting in the damp grass. I photographed this quirky little fungus by getting down beside it right at eye level. The canopy of the cedar tree, from the previous picture, makes a splendid backdrop for this stark white mushroom.

Several folks walked by and chuckled at the sight of me stretched out in the wet grass. But I was vindicated by another photographer who stopped, nodded approvingly, and told me where to find some more of these interesting and short models to shoot.

Post-Production Fun

Every once and a while I take a photograph from one of my portrait photo sessions and spend some time doing extra post-production work to achieve a special effect. This work can take a few minutes or it can take several hours. These enhanced photos are all generally for my own fun with no real intent, but I thought I’d share a few from over the past several months.

While these types of pictures can look inspired, usually a good deal of experimentation and rough drafts precede the finished product. For each of these, there might have been ten attempts to get the final version.

But, it’s all about having fun, being creative, and working it until you get a product that you enjoy. Since the advent of digital photography this type of post-production has become more and more popular; the spectrum of image manipulation and relative ease at which its accomplished can’t be matched.

I tried to choose four photos that I produced that have very different effects. I know readers will have their own great opinions–let me know in the comments which of these you like!

Amber’s Photo Shoot

Hi everyone. I’m a little behind in posting my recent shoots, so thanks for being patient. In this post I’m excited to show a photoshoot I had with a fresh new teen model from Atlanta named Amber. She wanted four distinct fashion and style looks for her portfolio, and when you look at these pictures you’ll see that she nailed it. In the top photo she is modeling an elegant gown, so to really feature her I went for soft lighting, and a natural landscape with minimal distractions.

In the shot above, to best get an edgy, fierce fashion look we took to the streets to get a few shots. What I really, really like about these two above is her hair. I wanted the sun to illuminate her beautiful tresses this way, so I had her pose where she would be backlit to highlight the volume and wavy texture.

For another pretty and sophisticated look, we used an antique saucer and tea cup as a prop. The color of the prom dress really helps make this shot along with Amber’s relaxed pose and the water background.

Good models are actresses for the camera, and should be able to get a variety of looks at a moments notice. Out of these four photos, I think this one was the most natural, a more sweet and demure expression to go with the flower theme. She obviously has talent and will do well in the business.

Beach Portraits

I frequently get to go to the lovely Georgia locale called St. Simon’s Island, and the last time there had another opportunity to shoot portraits on the beach. With water, sand, breezes, and lots of natural light–seaside is one of my favorite places for photography. I love to see how those elements come together in the still image.

Trust me, take a trip to the beach, find some time to take photos, and look for all the wonderful ingredients that can make an interesting photo. You don’t have to be a professional to experiment and have fun.

As one of Georgia’s Golden Isles, St. Simon’s is the most inhabited, but each of the other islands offers its own brand of charm for photographers and vacationers. There are many more pictures to be made, and many more to be made at beautiful St. Simon’s, so I’ll be back there soon.

July Photo Shoots

As a photographer, July was a busy month for me. The types of portrait sessions that I shot ran the gamut from senior portrait, family portrait, an out-of-town beach portrait, to a modeling portrait session, seen here in this post. Although these types of sessions are all portrait based, they are distinct enough that each one had to be approached and handled differently to get the best results.

Many models will book a shoot wanting to update their portfolio with a different “look” or concept. Having a variety of looks demonstrates their versatility to potential agents and maximizes their earning power. Here, Atlanta model Abby Gamache and I picked a country girl look for her shoot.

After assembling the wardrobe, choosing an appropriate location was next in line and nothing says “country” like a barn and grassy fields. In the photograph above, the open barn entrance provided lots of beautiful indirect ambient light for Abby to pose in.

Because her halter top was covered with white stars AND because it was July, we absolutely HAD to go with some fun shots like the one below. The colors and the two similar, but different, fields of stars work well together. I love how this turned out.

Coordinating and working with Abby on this session was a fun way to start off last month. Stay tuned for more posts soon!

Senior Portrait Time

School is almost back in session, and for rising high school seniors that means a hope-filled, exciting year full of activities, studies, and fun. For seniors wanting to commemorate that time of their life nothing is more special than having your senior portrait made.

While most schools will arrange for the traditional yearbook image, more and more people are turning to professional photographers to take individualized casual photos of their senior. With interesting locations, special interest themes (like sports, music, etc.), and relaxed poses, these photographs can truly represent the student.

This senior and I had a great time on his photo shoot. For me each shoot is like a mini-adventure where I get to explore, hangout with interesting people, and take part in someone’s memories. What could be better than that?

Model Gina’s Photo Shoot

When Gina Rivera and I decided to work together, I picked out a specific look for her that I believed would be fun and beautiful. As you can see from the photos she looks amazing in suspenders, bow tie, and bowler hat.

As a model, Gina is very versatile (which is apparent by seeing her portfolio) but she had not modeled this style before. To compliment her look we shot her photographs at a historic courthouse near Atlanta. For the photo above, I took an extremely low angle to capture her against the clock tower.

It was late in the day and the setting sun provided us with rays from the legendary “golden hour” of portrait photography, enhancing the gold tint and soft lighting that you can see in the picture above.

Hope you readers enjoy these photos as much as I do–would love to hear comments on favorites.

Rainy Day Photo Shoot

Atlanta should become known for having a great modeling scene. I had another good photo shoot, this time with a nice local model, the beautiful Tayla Morris. Even though it had rained for several hours and the temperature was beginning to drop, soon to land in the 20’s, she showed up ready to work our outdoor session.

She posed for my camera like a champ, never complaining about the cold, gusty wind. Only after I asked her did she admit to being cold. But we still managed to get photos like this:

Photographers appreciate it when models give their best even when conditions aren’t so good. Towards the end of the photo shoot Tayla braved a wardrobe change, putting on a short sleeve shirt for some final shots, including this amazing one:

Yoga Portrait Session

When DeAnna asked me to shoot her yoga portrait, I jumped at the chance. Not only is she a good friend, but I also like taking photographs of people who enjoy what they do, as that translates well onto the image.  As a popular yoga instructor, DeAnna needed these pictures for advertising and promoting her classes at Kashi Atlanta.

The morning of her portrait shoot was beautiful, the weather perfect. It was an easy, relaxed shoot, and she glided through a series of poses as the camera clicked away.  Being a photographer who knows only a little about yoga, I appreciated DeAnna’s spot-on suggestions and ideas.

The shoot was a fun collaboration, and the experience was seemingly blessed and approved when during the final poses a rainbow appeared in the morning sky. Amazing.

Urban Decay

Urban decay photography by Notes Of Light, Atlanta & Gwinnett

I’ve been interested in this relatively new field of photography called urban decay. There are many great photographers who seek out abandoned spaces and who specialize in capturing the latter moments of a building’s life before its complete demise. And the better photographs can only be described as “hauntingly beautiful,” a term best suited to this genre.

On recent trip to Tennessee, I found a great spot at an old factory to practice taking a few pictures in this style. As much as any other type of photography good light is essential, but also trying to capture and highlight the decay in an effective way, to evoke aspects such as waste, former glory, loneliness,  imagination, and beauty in an overlooked landscape, is equally important.

Here’s a few of my tries–click on a picture to see it full size–I would love to hear what people think.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Street Life

Nighttime photography by Notes Of Light, Atlanta & Gwinnett

What conjures more imagery in an urban environment than a brightly lit theater at night? Notes Of Light Photography would like to submit these photos of the beautiful Tivoli Theater in Chattanooga for the weekly theme of street life.

Although the Tivoli Theater resides not only on a prominent spot on Broad Street but also in the hearts of generations of Chattanoogans, the scene depicted is easily recognizable from our own memories and could be from any city we imagine.

These shots were taken at 4/10 of a second at f7.1 for the image with the blurred car, and 1/50 of a second at f2.0 for the image with the pedestrians.
