Summer Fashion Photography

Summertime brings warmer temperatures and cooler clothes. I worked with a talented male model, Brandon Quigley, on a fashion shoot this week in Atlanta. The outfit he styled was white chinos with dark blue v-neck sweater, overlaid with army green vest, and vans.

Brandon brought a great vibe to the photo session, which definitely transfers to the images, with his professionalism and laid-back attitude. Although it was a typically hot summer day in the South, we got some really great shots together.

One aspect of photography that I enjoy is working with the elements to get interesting photographs. In these pictures I tried to let the sun and heat naturally influence the angles that were chosen and poses we concentrated on. To try and ignore the environment for the sake of the photo might have been a real struggle, leading to an unproductive outing. But, I think we produced better and more creative photos by accepting the conditions and using them to guide the shoot.

Garden Photo Shoot

Last week I raced impending rain clouds to complete a fashion photo shoot with the lovely model, Laura Rozar. Nestled in between the blooming flowers of a perennial garden, Laura posed for the camera, checked the most recent images, and quickly adjusted her pose. Working with another should be a collaboration, and I appreciate a model who can not only take instruction but turn around and offer more–an improvement, or creative idea–as she did in the photo above.

The outfit being modeled in these photos, a peach crop-top paired with a hot-pink skirt, was a vivid standout among the greenery of the garden. Despite the brilliant color combinations, I also wanted to capture at least one photo as a sensitive black-and-white portrait study and emphasize the lighting rather than the colors. See below, I think it turned out well and is a great example of the connection between camera and subject.

Subway Fashion Photography

Typically I don’t shoot professional photography indoors, but I had a fashion shoot and wanted to pair the beautiful model and her clothes with a futuristic, industrial setting. I decided on a particular subway station after scouting for awhile, because I believed it would fulfill my vision of that juxtaposition.

The model I worked with, Brittani Bumb, was particularly talented and professional. Not only is she a fashion model, but she is also a clothing designer which, I believe, allows her to really know the clothes she’s wearing and how to effectively model different aspects of that wardrobe.

This was a really enjoyable shoot and we achieved some great shots together. It was also good to break out of my usual natural light photography and work in an environment with artificial lighting. I believe you can’t grow unless you challenge yourself.

Carolina Photo Shoot

Getting to shoot a portrait session out of state was a wonderful opportunity; there were new landscapes, people to meet, and many beautiful sights. This time it was a photo shoot with an amazing young lady.

Choosing an accessory or two for the model to sport can really make a simple outfit particularly eye-catching. Here I had her wear a scarf and an antique hat over a plain tank top. While she would look pretty either way, the accessories push the photo to another level of interesting.

The same can be said for going barefoot. This change in wardrobe makes the pose, in the shot above, more organic. Now shoeless, she appears to be perching by the creek–a more compelling pose, in this instance, than simply squatting. I’ve learned over time that sometimes small adjustments can mean big improvements in portrait photography.

Bill & Emily’s Engagement Portrait Session

Two friends of mine just recently got engaged, so you can imagine how honored I felt when they asked me to shoot their official engagement portraits. It’s very exciting to get to take part in something that beautiful and special.

We scheduled an afternoon at a farm outside of Atlanta for the photo shoot and hoped for great weather. When I got there that day, they had already prepared one of the amazing locations there for a particular shot. Because they’re both musicians and because music is such a huge part of their lives, we wanted some of the photographs to really show their mutual love for it. As you’ll see, guitars and drums were incorporated into several of their portraits.

It was a great, productive time. I had a blast working with them both–besides individually they also make a great couple. I want to thank them both again for letting me take part in that day. For the readers, I want to leave you all with this last photo of Bill & Emily: I think its a powerful portrait of the two heading into the future to begin their lives together.

Ready For Springtime (Portraits From Almost A Year Ago)

Portrait photography by Notes Of Light, Atlanta & Gwinnett

Here in Atlanta we have been in the midst of a dreary bit of Winter weather and there are little signs that it will let up soon. In an optimistic attempt to push the current snow, sleet, and rain from reality into memory, I’ve looked through portrait sessions from this past Spring and selected a few unpublished (until now!) photos to share with you all.

I’m glad these photos can get some airtime now; although not chosen at the time, I love the way these turned out. And they have me hoping for a quick change in the weather.

I’m reminded of warmer weather when beautiful flowers are emerging and the days begin lasting longer.

Photography & Glass

Last week I teamed up with my friend Sandra for a photography portrait session where all the photos involved glass. This is a project I had been wanting to try for awhile, but I wanted to find the right person to model, someone who could convey different moods and capture the viewers attention. Sandra is beautiful and a wonderful singer, one who connects easily with the music and audience and so I knew she’d be perfect. Besides, she is easy-going and I thought she would be pretty patient with me and the whole process of staging the shots!

I love evocative photographs that stir the imagination. In the first photo, Sandra is gazing at the clouds in pensive thought and those same clouds are reflected in the window of the car, giving the whole photo a dreamy effect. In the next photo, below, the viewer becomes an active part of the story by her direct look at the camera.

After we experimented with many shots through glass to achieve different effects, I wanted to join her on the other side of the window. With streaming light coming in and highlighting her from behind, I shot this more traditional portrait. As well as the pose and lighting, I like the way the little splashes of vivid color and the complementary colors play, and the texture of the coat.

Men’s Fashion Photography

Photographing men’s fashion has to be approached a little differently than a women’s fashion shoot. While the basic plan of getting interesting and clear pictures is the same, consideration is made for more masculine settings, poses, and photo treatments. Dillan Moore, an Atlanta based model, runs a popular style blog called Moore Than Style and needed some fresh shots for three new outfits.

In the above photo, Dillan is modeling clothes from American Eagle Outfitters, and because of the casual look we photographed at a mountain location, with more active poses rather than stationary poses.

This dapper and inspired look required a more formal backdrop, so we shot on the lawn that was reminiscent of a southern mansion estate. Here the posing is a more static menswear style of pose, to match Dillan’s more dignified, but fun, appearance.

The same can be said for this London influenced outfit. To convey a proper British feel, we again used the stately facade of the building as a backdrop. I wanted the grain of the granite to accentuate the texture of his tweed, and I made careful adjustments in the editing process to really capture the “heaviness” of both the stone and wool. This was shot after clouds moved in which also contributed to the British-ness of image.

I enjoyed working with Dillan who arrived ready to work and who seems to have a lot going for him. Check in to his blog as he will soon be posting more of our men’s fashion photos.

Photo Shoot With Laura

Or, HOW DO I CHOOSE A FAVORITE?

Sometimes everything just goes right, and an experience is smooth and clicks. This photo shoot was like that: weather, timing, chemistry, and model’s ability were all top notch.

I met model Laura Pendleton for our scheduled shoot one morning and she was on time, professional, and ready to work. It’s always in the best interest of models who work with natural light photographers to be on time, because outdoor light changes quickly and that affects the quality of the photographs.

Although it was a bright morning, for this picture, above, we shot in a quarry in the shade. I like to capture some essence of the weather, and it being a chilly morning the blue tint of the granite and shadow really gave the photo a “cool” feel. Plus, because of that tint, the model’s top contrasts extremely well and her eyes really “pop.”

In these four beautiful shots, each has a different look based on how high the sun is and different amounts of shade and reflection. That variety helps a portfolio, whether it’s a photographer’s or a model’s.

Laura, despite being fairly new to modeling, is a natural at it and looks great. We got along well and were able to try several ideas, looks, and poses before the session ended. My only complaint is that with her help I ended up with too many great shots from which to choose!

Photo Shoot With Tiffany

As winter is approaching, we’re getting less and less adequate time for photo sessions. The days are shorter, the weather less predictable and certainly chillier, too. During a quick break in the rain a couple of weeks ago, I fit in a photography shoot with Tiffany.

Tiffany is an easy going young lady, and her relaxed nature shows up in the photos. She had no problem working to get the shots we needed, laying on the damp ground for one, climbing atop a column on a bridge for another, and standing in the middle of a creek.

That relaxed personality, combined with a pretty setting and pretty subject make for winning photos. And we had a great time working together.

Model Gina’s Photo Shoot

When Gina Rivera and I decided to work together, I picked out a specific look for her that I believed would be fun and beautiful. As you can see from the photos she looks amazing in suspenders, bow tie, and bowler hat.

As a model, Gina is very versatile (which is apparent by seeing her portfolio) but she had not modeled this style before. To compliment her look we shot her photographs at a historic courthouse near Atlanta. For the photo above, I took an extremely low angle to capture her against the clock tower.

It was late in the day and the setting sun provided us with rays from the legendary “golden hour” of portrait photography, enhancing the gold tint and soft lighting that you can see in the picture above.

Hope you readers enjoy these photos as much as I do–would love to hear comments on favorites.

Rainy Day Photo Shoot

Atlanta should become known for having a great modeling scene. I had another good photo shoot, this time with a nice local model, the beautiful Tayla Morris. Even though it had rained for several hours and the temperature was beginning to drop, soon to land in the 20’s, she showed up ready to work our outdoor session.

She posed for my camera like a champ, never complaining about the cold, gusty wind. Only after I asked her did she admit to being cold. But we still managed to get photos like this:

Photographers appreciate it when models give their best even when conditions aren’t so good. Towards the end of the photo shoot Tayla braved a wardrobe change, putting on a short sleeve shirt for some final shots, including this amazing one:
