School is winding down and senior portrait season is winding up, and I want to highlight a few sample photos from a recent session with a lovely young lady who is graduating.

There are certain milestones in life that deserve commemorating and high school graduation is certainly one of them. That’s why I enjoy working with families during these moments and getting to take part in a small way to help preserve those fun memories with keepsake photographs.

What a fun day we had getting these shots and a proud moment for me. Congratulations to this and all of the other graduates this year; you’ve got much to look forward to!

Urban Woods

Enjoyed working with model/actor Michael Franji this past week. We shot for about an hour in an urban park setting, which allowed us to get a variety of looks. Michael was easy-going and confident, so we were able to work quickly getting these shots.

The black & white at the top of this page was the last shot of the day. He posed on an overlook while I stood below in the park and photographed him with the high-rise in the background. I wanted to use the building’s edge as multiple leading lines to the subject. The unusual angle helps make this shot interesting, and while the color image was good I like the contrast of the black & white best.

Water features also are great for punching up a portrait. Here, I posed Michael by a pond and took the photo while balancing on the same rock wall. With the mostly green/yellow color tone, the blue sweater/black jeans really pop, bringing the subject into the foreground.

Experimentation is a great way to learn to use background elements. Always accentuate, rather than distract from the model.

Congratulations are in order for this lovely couple on their 5oth wedding anniversary. They celebrated by having a portrait session to mark the occasion.

Because their anniversary falls close to Christmas, they also used their favorite shot on a Christmas card to send to family and friends.

As I worked with them, I could see why they made it to 50. They were very sweet with each other and showed each other respect and patience. It was a real joy to be a part of their portrait celebration.

Senior 2016

I had a great time working with this local Gwinnett student on her senior portraits. She was friendly, relaxed, and ready to start shooting at our appointment first thing in the morning. One of the goals for a photographer is to catch the personality of the subject in their work, but that often depends on the subject. No problem here, she did great.

Her teal dress complimented her perfectly and really gave the images an added pop. We decided on a scenic location where a barn and wildflowers would provide the photographs an interesting backdrop without being distracting.

As a double athlete at her school, she wanted some of the photos to display her love of sports. I love to tailor photography towards the subjects’ interests and in this photo she got to show off her softball skills.

Photographing high school seniors is memorable because you’re catching them at a significant and special time of their lives filled with promise. It’s a bright future that she has to look forward to after high school!

Amber’s Photo Shoot

Hi everyone. I’m a little behind in posting my recent shoots, so thanks for being patient. In this post I’m excited to show a photoshoot I had with a fresh new teen model from Atlanta named Amber. She wanted four distinct fashion and style looks for her portfolio, and when you look at these pictures you’ll see that she nailed it. In the top photo she is modeling an elegant gown, so to really feature her I went for soft lighting, and a natural landscape with minimal distractions.

In the shot above, to best get an edgy, fierce fashion look we took to the streets to get a few shots. What I really, really like about these two above is her hair. I wanted the sun to illuminate her beautiful tresses this way, so I had her pose where she would be backlit to highlight the volume and wavy texture.

For another pretty and sophisticated look, we used an antique saucer and tea cup as a prop. The color of the prom dress really helps make this shot along with Amber’s relaxed pose and the water background.

Good models are actresses for the camera, and should be able to get a variety of looks at a moments notice. Out of these four photos, I think this one was the most natural, a more sweet and demure expression to go with the flower theme. She obviously has talent and will do well in the business.

July Photo Shoots

As a photographer, July was a busy month for me. The types of portrait sessions that I shot ran the gamut from senior portrait, family portrait, an out-of-town beach portrait, to a modeling portrait session, seen here in this post. Although these types of sessions are all portrait based, they are distinct enough that each one had to be approached and handled differently to get the best results.

Many models will book a shoot wanting to update their portfolio with a different “look” or concept. Having a variety of looks demonstrates their versatility to potential agents and maximizes their earning power. Here, Atlanta model Abby Gamache and I picked a country girl look for her shoot.

After assembling the wardrobe, choosing an appropriate location was next in line and nothing says “country” like a barn and grassy fields. In the photograph above, the open barn entrance provided lots of beautiful indirect ambient light for Abby to pose in.

Because her halter top was covered with white stars AND because it was July, we absolutely HAD to go with some fun shots like the one below. The colors and the two similar, but different, fields of stars work well together. I love how this turned out.

Coordinating and working with Abby on this session was a fun way to start off last month. Stay tuned for more posts soon!

Ready For Springtime (Portraits From Almost A Year Ago)

Here in Atlanta we have been in the midst of a dreary bit of Winter weather and there are little signs that it will let up soon. In an optimistic attempt to push the current snow, sleet, and rain from reality into memory, I’ve looked through portrait sessions from this past Spring and selected a few unpublished (until now!) photos to share with you all.

I’m glad these photos can get some airtime now; although not chosen at the time, I love the way these turned out. And they have me hoping for a quick change in the weather.

I’m reminded of warmer weather when beautiful flowers are emerging and the days begin lasting longer.

Model Gina’s Photo Shoot

When Gina Rivera and I decided to work together, I picked out a specific look for her that I believed would be fun and beautiful. As you can see from the photos she looks amazing in suspenders, bow tie, and bowler hat.

As a model, Gina is very versatile (which is apparent by seeing her portfolio) but she had not modeled this style before. To compliment her look we shot her photographs at a historic courthouse near Atlanta. For the photo above, I took an extremely low angle to capture her against the clock tower.

It was late in the day and the setting sun provided us with rays from the legendary “golden hour” of portrait photography, enhancing the gold tint and soft lighting that you can see in the picture above.

Hope you readers enjoy these photos as much as I do–would love to hear comments on favorites.

Sister Portrait Session – 1

Portrait photography by Notes Of Light, Atlanta
Portrait in natural setting by Notes Of Light ~ Photography, Atlanta & Gwinnett

I love working with people, so portraits are my preferred niche of photography.  I got the opportunity to shoot these two sisters together in a couple of photo sessions, the first of which is represented in this post.

These girls are both beautiful and full of personality, and in portrait photography it is a fun challenge to try to capture that in the pictures. Letting the personality of the subject show and project outward can turn a simple image into a portrait to keep a lifetime.

This session was taken on a mountain in the late afternoon. We had great lighting and scenery which made for a perfect mix of natural beauty. With portrait photography I try to let the scene enhance the subject without taking over entirely.  But that sometimes is a fine balance.
